Songs like “Amazing Grace” and “I’ll Fly Away” hold a special place in some people’s heart, and May 5 Crabapple First Baptist Church is hosting a group of singers who sing these songs as a point of fellowship for the community.

“This started from a small group of singers that had gotten together actually for a funeral service,” said Milton resident and group member Jeff Nunnally. “We decided that with all these talented singers around we should do this.”

Nunnally said the group has gradually grown and churches have reached out to them to bring the singing to their sanctuaries. In January, 1,000 people came out for one of these singings in Forsyth.

“It has really taken on a life of its own,” he said.

The group sings form the Red Back Church Hymnal, an old Church of God hymnal that just celebrated its 60th anniversary.

“There are so many people who grew up on this song book,” Nunnally said. “It’s just been music and songs that have stuck around.”

There will be about 115 people in the choir at the Crabapple First Baptist event and Nunnally said they want the community to come to either join in the singing or just listen to the songs.

“We invite anybody to come in,” he said. “It’s very uplifting for a lot of people.”

The singing will start at 6 p.m. and usually lasts around two hours.

“We could go longer but we want to make sure people get home for the night,” Nunnally said.

Crabapple First Baptist Church is at 12760 Birmingham Highway in Milton.
