Last season, The Beach at Clayton County International Park in Jonesboro drew more than 78,000 visitors to the eight-acre facility, according to the park’s deputy administrator Troy Stubbs, with more than 4,500 visiting on the Memorial Day weekend alone.

With the special entertainment planned this Memorial Day weekend, plus the popular fireworks display at dusk and the excitement visitors have of entering an actual white sandy beach water park close to home, Stubbs hopes to establish a new attendance record.

“With school out and Memorial Day being the unofficial start of summer, we have always had good crowds on this holiday weekend and I expect no different this year,” Stubbs said.

“More and more, I believe, people are finding out about the Beach in Clayton County, whether they be from the metro Atlanta area or almost anywhere in the country,” he added. “Clayton County International Park, The Beach, is just a great place to bring the entire family for a day of fun in the sun.”

Stubbs also plans to continue a tradition this weekend which he and his staff started several years ago, checking to see where visitors to the beach have come from.

“It’s not unusual to find automobiles here that have come from a great distance to visit us,” Stubbs said. “We have found cars with tags from Tennessee, New York, Pennsylvania and even California.”

The beach opens its Memorial Day weekend at 10 a.m. Saturday followed at noon by the debut of a new musical group providing on the beach entertainment, the Contagious Band, which will perform throughout the afternoon and early evening.

Admission for Saturday is $10 per person, regardless of age, which includes all beach activities. However, there are no parking fees.

Starting around 9 p.m., the beach will again offer another tradition which has proven to be one of its most popular, fireworks over the water.

The following day, Sunday, the Beach is open from 1 to 7 p.m.

On Memorial Day Monday, the Beach is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is $11 for adults and $9 for children.

The day’s activities will include a Dee Jay spinning disks from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

According to Amy Keeney, marketing and communications manager for Clayton County International Park the Beach, the facility has been a great asset to Clayton, “and offer a beach and water park facility right here in our own back yard,” she added.

In an effort to further enhance the convenience of visitors to Clayton facilities, including the park and beach, the department is establishing an integrated software system, called RecTrac, which is designed to simplify registration and participation in county recreational events.

“With this system, people can register their family information and, once their family account has been created with us, they can register for classes on line,” Keeney said.

The system will also allow those having registered to pay for classes offered by the parks and recreation department by credit card.
