Which is why Greg Rogers, along with a few other key players, are establishing a songwriters’ festival — an event where a handful of songwriters’ take the stage and play originals to a crowd.
The idea started simply enough, said Fayetteville resident Rogers, who writes songs and plays guitar and drums.
He and his friend Rebecca Walker Jones thought to start a festival in Opelika, Ala., called Opelika Unplugged, which quickly grew in popularity.
Word made it back to Wendy Macguire, owner of Macguire’s, an Irish pub and restaurant in Senoia, who wanted to provide a venue for a songwriter’s festival in south metro.
“We are starting to call it the Unplugged Series,” Rogers said.
The event will take place on the third Saturday of the month starting in July.
“We literally have songwriters from all over the place beating down the door to come play this thing,” Rogers said. “It’s really kind of caught us off guard. We thought it would be a cool idea, and there might be interest — you never know in Peachtree City and Fayette County, it’s not a hotbed for a music scene — but I guess there was more interest than we realized.”
He said 35 songwriters have shown interest thus far, but the event can only showcase about nine songwriters at a time. A typical event will have a round which features three songwriters, who each take turn playing three or four songs. A second round will feature three more, as will a third.
While the details have yet to be drawn up on the event, Rogers said he thinks it will spur a good turnout.
“That it has a Fayette County, Coweta County, even Henry County draw to it, I think it’s going to be well-received,” he said.
