Behind a pair of tennis state titles last month, the Gladiators finished the 2011-2012 school year in second place in the Georgia Athletic Director’s Association Regions Director’s Cup Standings as a school, and the Lady Gladiators took first place overall in the female division.
“It’s a great honor for the community, the school, our programs, coaches and athletes,” said Johns Creek athletic director and head football coach Mike Cloy. “High School athletics really comes down to the community and ours has been great from day one.”
Johns Creek finished the year with 994 Director’s Cup points, trailing only Marist at 1,153.5 for first place overall.
The Lady Gladiators earned 561.5 points on their own and topped the Lady War Eagles (515.5 points) in the final girls’ standings.
The Johns Creek girls made the state playoffs in five bracketed sports last season (tennis, softball, lacrosse, soccer, and volleyball) and were very strong in the non-bracketed sports (swimming, cheerleading, cross country, track and field.)
“We have a lot of girls that have worked hard to be successful here from day one and we are fortunate enough to have a number of great coaches in a lot of different sports,” said Cloy.
“Finishing first is a real honor for them and a very special achievement.”
The Johns Creek boys finished in fifth place among AAAA schools, garnering the majority of their points from top-three finishes in tennis (first) swimming (third), golf (third), and baseball (third). The Gladiators also collected points for their state playoff appearances in lacrosse and football.
“This year was the culmination of everything coming together really early for us, now we will see what happens when we jump to AAAAAA next year,” said Cloy.
Johns Creek will move from AAAA to the newly designed class AAAAAA — the state’s largest and newest classification that was added during the winter.
The Gladiators will compete in Region 6AAAAAA against county-rivals Alpharetta, Centennial, Chattahoochee, and four Forsyth County schools — Lambert, North Forsyth, South Forsyth and West Forsyth.
