The results of the sixth, seventh and eighth grade 2012 Criterion Referenced Competency Tests, released late last Friday, showed good improvement for Clayton students in those grade levels, especially when compared to the county’s 2011 results.
In reading and comprehension this year, more than 92.3 percent of students in the sixth grade met or exceeded the state standards, compared to 89.5 last year.
Similar improvements were made in the seventh grade where, this year, 91.3 percent of students met or exceeded the state reading standard compared to 85.8 last year while, in the eight grade, the percentage level also rose this year, with 93.7 percent meeting or exceeding the state standard compared to 93.4 last year.
With regard to math, improvements were made at the sixth grade level as, this year, 69.2 percent of students met or exceeded the standard compared to 68.3 last year while, in the seventh grade, 87.1 percent did the same compared to 85.1 last year.
However, at the eighth grade level, there was a drop off in math as 68.3 percent met or exceeded the state standard last year compared to 65.0 this year.
Clayton students are improving in science at all three grade levels. This year in the sixth grade, 58.3 percent met or exceeded state standards compared to 50.1 percent last year while for science at the seventh-grade level, 79.4 percent met or exceeded standards this year compared to 68.3 last year.
However, eighth-grade science reflected the most impressive improvement, showing more than a 20-point percentage increase in those meeting or exceeding state standards. Last year, only 44.1 percent did that compared to 64.7 this year.
In English-Language Arts, with the exception of the sixth-grade which showed a slight percentage point drop in the number of students meeting or exceeding state standards this year, Clayton County Public Schools showed improvement.
Despite the sixth grade falling from 87.6 to 86.6 percent in students meeting or exceeding state standards, these numbers rose at the seventh and eighth grade levels.
In the seventh grade, those meeting or exceeding state English-Language Arts standards in 2012 were 91.2 percent compared to 90.8 percent last year. In the eighth grade, 93.2 percent showed improvement compared to 90.6 last year.
