The Henry County Parks and Recreation Department has many different activities for youth and adults alike throughout the year, but particularly in the summer months. From summer day camps for children to co-ed softball leagues for adults, HCPRD has something for everyone.
The county does not stick to conventional sports when offering activities. The public can go out to one of the many parks and witness BMX racing, remote controlled car racing and even paintball. The BMX park at Sandy Ridge Park in McDonough is fun for all ages.
“BMX is now an Olympic sport and it is a great sport for the entire family to enjoy,” track operator Alan Farmer said. “It allows riders as young as 2 years old all the way to 78 to enjoy a fun time.”
And for those parents looking for a safe environment to leave the children in during the summer can look no further than the summer and teen camps across the county.
“We have many friends who coordinate when they come to camp so they can be together,” teen camp counselor Cindy Enfinger said. “Some of the kids think they are too old to be at camp, but they all end up having fun when they are here. It is a good social time for them and it is not as strict as school.”
HCPRD wheelchair sports coordinator Harlon Matthews has given those athletes who compete in the wheelchair division of the Georgia High School Association an avenue for a camp as well. Matthews held a training camp for the Henry Hurricanes this summer and plans to continue with the camp in years to come.
There are 13 parks in McDonough, nine parks and two recreation centers in Stockbridge, three parks in Hampton and a park and recreation center in Locust Grove. So, no matter where in the county resident search for activities to be a part of, the HCPRD has something to offer the public.
There are also clinics of every sort and lessons to be had in many sports. The tennis lessons with Joann Compton have been popular for the past three years. Compton runs through the basics of tennis, but turns the experience into an academic experience as well. There are several basketball, soccer and football camps occurring throughout the year. The Henry County Parks and Recreation does what it can to keep Henry County active and healthy.
