Couch has a long history of teaching, beginning in Columbus, Ohio, where she taught sixth-grade math for seven years, followed by a short one-year stint teaching English in Windermere, Fla.
From there, Couch arrived in Fayette County Schools in 2000, teaching elementary school math for six years and high school math for two.
Stepping out the classroom, she took her first role in administration while still in Fayette County as an assistant principal for J.C. Booth Middle School.
“Having taught elementary, middle and high school math, I realized that I could help more students by helping teachers,” Couch said. “That is when I knew I wanted to become an administrator.”
She stayed in that position for five years all the while being prepared her for her upcoming role, she said
The first day of school for Fulton County Schools is Aug. 13, a day that Couch is ready for. For the 2012-13 school year and her first year as principal of Hapeville Elementary School, she has set goals.
“My goals are Hapeville Elementary are three-fold — build relationships with every student, teacher and parent and community partner, ensure that every child is reading at or above grade level by third grade and improve math fluency so that all children gain confidence in math,” she said.
These goals are at the core of Couch’s enthusiasm of her new position, she said.
“The principal, just like the coach of a team, sets the tone, sets expectations and if effective, can achieve anything,” she said.
Hapeville Elementary, according to Couch, is just the place to make these strides in the right direction.
“Hapeville is a community embedded in history and culture,” said Couch. “The people of Hapeville set this community apart. In our fast pace and competitive society, Hapeville is one of the few places on the map reserved for family and friends.”
Three other principals in south Fulton will also begin their first school year with the school system on Monday include Lori Bolds, McNair Middle School, Richard Fowler, Woodland Middle School and Trici Smith, Feldwood Elementary.
