That’s been the case for Fellowship Christian football coach Hunter Chadwick, who inherited a program in 2010 with a roster that couldn’t go two-deep if it wanted to.
Slowly but surely though, the numbers game is turning in the Paladins’ favor.
“My first year we had 22 kids on the team, we upped in to 32 last year and we should be somewhere between 40 and 50 this year,” said Chadwick, who was previously an assistant at Savannah Christian.
“The numbers play a big part and we are trying to keep them moving in the right direction.” Chadwick credited the increasingly popular feeder programs at FCS for a jump in their roster size. The Paladins will field tackle football programs for fourth through twelfth graders this fall. On the field Chadwick’s squad will look to improve on their 5-5 season last fall, a swift improvement from their 2-8 mark in 2010. His triple-option offense will be run by first-year quarterback Hunter Bryant, a junior that saw the field at wide receiver and on defense as a freshman and sophomore.
Labeled by Chadwick as one of the team’s biggest leaders and a key to their success in 2012, Bryant will have the luxury of three-year starters Tyler Hart (slot back) and James Wilson (fullback) to assist him in the backfield.
“We’re young and we’re going to have our work cut out for us, but I think we can have a really good year. It’s just a matter of finding the 17 or 18 guys that can really play and getting them all on the same page,” said Chadwick.
