So when the Gladiators took the field for their season opener against Woodstock it was only fitting that the signal caller with 28 games of varsity experience played like the senior leader he is expected to be.
“He can run it, throw it, and is just a great competitor out on that field,” said Johns Creek coach Mike Cloy. “He’s a tremendous athlete and a great team player too. He’s a guy we know can make things happen on the field and most of time its positive.”
The positive plays came in big chunks against Woodstock as Overton scored three rushing touchdowns in the 28-0 win including a pair of quarterback keepers from 52 and 50 yards out — bobbing and weaving through the Wolverine defense both times before outrunning the Woodstock secondary to the end zone.
He finished the night with 266 yards of total offense (169 rushing and 97 passing) while leading Johns Creek’s option offense to 400 total yards and 303 on the ground.
Also a standout on the Gladiator baseball team that advanced to the final four of the state playoffs last spring, Overton is being recruited by a number of Division I programs as an outfielder.
