Fairburn city officials give their time to keep the city running smoothly for the benefit of its residents, and now, they are giving a little more.

Seventeen managers and assistant managers from all city departments have come together to create Fairburn Team 360, which will work the through the rest of the year to raise funds to create a small pocket park next to city hall.

The initiative is part of management training the city is receiving from the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government, Fairburn Fire Department Assistant Chief Stephen Hood said.

City Manager Tom Barber said the class is divided into three levels, taking place twice a month with eight of nine days of instruction per course.

The first level was completed earlier in the year, the second will be complete by the end of the year and the third will be in early 2013, he said.

The group will spend the next year fundraising to create the park.

“After much discussion, we decided to develop the open city property next to city hall for a pocket park,” Hood said. “This picket park will enable our citizens and city workers an opportunity to relax and enjoy the surroundings near city hall.’

The group is currently finalizing the plans for the park, he said, which will include a gazebo, benches and a picnic table.

Barber said other projects were considered — adding city signage to local neighborhoods, planting a memorial garden dedicated to city war veterans and installing bench seating at Duncan Park — before choosing the pocket park.

He said the park is tentatively slated to be complete by the end of the year.

The major fundraiser Fairburn Team 360 has planned is a golf tournament, which will take place Oct. 22 at Durham Lakes Golf Course.

The tournament kicks off at 8 a.m. with registration, followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Entry fees are $60 per player and $240 per team and include coffee, a light breakfast, lunch and a ticket for a chance to win a Taylor Made RBX Driver.

Raffle tickets will be sold for a chance to win door prizes, and awards will be given to top finishing teams, as well as a long drive winner and closest to the pin winner.

“We will potentially be hosting fundraising at local food establishments, booths of catering at the local fall festival and other family oriented activities,” Barber said in addition to the tournament.
