Leading the stingy defensive effort was Patrick Messinger, a junior defensive back that racked up six individual tackles from his cornerback position and made one of the plays of the game on defense.
“[Mount Vernon] tried to throw one out in the flat and Patrick came up and made a heck of a play,” said Mount Pisgah football coach Doug Dixon. “He picked it off, looked up, found his blockers, and took it all the way to the house about 50 yards.”
Messinger, a third-year starter, also returned three punts in the game for a total of 75 yards.
Dixon went on to say that Messinger’s success as a football player isn’t built around an imposing physical frame (he stands just 5-foot-9 and weighs a slight 160 pounds), but revolves around his old-fashioned approach to the game.
“He’s not real big, but he is a gritty kid with a ton of mental and physical toughness. He’s hard nosed and knows how to play the game the right way.”
