The Dunwoody Nature Center has begun its annual fall plant sale featuring a wide selection of native plants organized under the theme, “Going Green in Your Garden.”

The fall sale is coordinated by the nature center’s site leaders and volunteers from the DeKalb County Master Gardeners program and all of the proceeds from the plant sale go to center’s programs and projects. Plant pictures, full descriptions, and sunlight recommendations are all available through the website at www.dunwoodynature.org/fall-plant-sale.

Online ordering is now open and runs through Sept. 28. Plant pickup dates at the center are scheduled for Oct. 5 from 3 to 5 p.m., and Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to noon.

This year, the master gardeners and the nature center decided to scale down their spring plant so that a greater emphasis could be placed on this fall’s sale. Why plant in the fall? Plants installed in fall usually outperform those planted in spring.

Fall planting is considered best because it is less stressful to the plant than spring and summer plantings. During the fall, temperatures are cooler and plants are going dormant. As top growth decreases, there is less demand on the roots for water and nutrients.

Roots continue to grow and become established throughout the fall and winter months — even when the top is dormant. By spring, the well-established roots are ready to support new growth and flowers.
