The church’s gym will be a hive of activity as hundreds of volunteers assemble protein-rich meal packets during eight shifts of two hours or more beginning Friday. Over the past two years, Peachtree Presbyterian’s efforts have resulted in the assembly and packing of more than 750,000 meals. This year, the goal is to pack an additional 325,000 meals.
Feed My Starving Children is a Coon Rapids, Minn.-based Christian ministry committed to feeding God’s starving children, hungry in body and spirit. Its approach is simple: children and adults hand-pack meals formulated specially for starving children, which are then shipped to nearly 70 countries around the world.
Jay Madden, the church’s pastor for mission, said he is amazed by the energy that exudes from every person as they collectively work to create life enriching meal packs destined to be delivered to needy children around the globe.
“The excitement builds throughout each shift as the volunteers come closer and closer to achieving their group’s goal,” Madden said. “Their faces beam with pride as they are filled with the wonderful spirit of knowing that they are part of a diverse fellowship of people who packaged meals not only filled with nutrition, but also filled with hope for children throughout the world who must deal with starvation and related diseases on a daily basis.”
The volunteers will begin their quest toward surpassing the million meal mark Friday at 4 p.m. and continue with their effort during the following shifts:
o Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
o Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
o Sunday from 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Three openings remain for those who wish to join their neighbors and friends in this humanitarian effort. The schedule of shifts with openings is as follows:
o Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.: 50 openings
o Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m.: 95 openings (There will be a social for single adults in the church’s Lodge building afterwards.)
