Lovett volleyball wants one person touching the ball when it reaches the Lions’ side.

Senior libero Maggie Sinkler has shown throughout this season she’s up to the task of putting Lovett in good position when the ball comes to its side.

“She is our stability in the backcourt and has been leading us in digs and passing average this whole season,” Lovett coach Mary Buczek said. “She controls the whole backcourt, and we want her touching as many first contacts as she can.”

The steady play of Sinkler, a three-year starter and captain, helped Lovett overcome a rocky start to the season as the Lions tried to settle on their offensive system, which is now a 5-1 with setter Gayle Jenks.

Lovett has won six consecutive matches since Sept. 8, including wins over schools in larger classifications like Lassiter, Dunwoody and Starr’s Mill, as well as Wesleyan, Lamar County and Paideia.

Sinkler’s a key reason why, and Lovett’s starting to click just in time for Area 4-AA play.

“She does it well, and partly why our offense has improved and our defensive game as well,” Buczek said. “She has, just like I said, been stability and is consistent, every single match.”
