That is exactly what Westminster football has found in senior Hays Meyer, a first-year starter that has turned into a key cog in the Wildcats’ stingy defense.
“Hays is exactly what you want in a safety,” said Westminster assistant coach Joe Sturniolo of the 6-foot-2, 185 pound athlete. “He’s one of our smarter players, he plays with tenacity and he has a great eye for reading the play and knowing where the ball is going to be.”
Heading into last Friday’s game against Woodward Academy, Meyer was third on the team in tackles with 25 and the team leader with two interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
Sturniolo went on to say that Meyer’s play is a big reason the Westminster defense is allowing just 16 points per game and also a bit surprising since he was in a battle for his job in preseason camp.
“We didn’t really know he was going to start going into the year, but we know he will be now,” he said. “He has blossomed before our eyes and he will be playing a major part in our success going forward.”
