They are: Michael Griffin (2000), basketball; Stacy Maxwell (2004), soccer; Marshall Tyler (1995), soccer; and Joey Vitale (2006), baseball. At the ceremony, each inductee received a commemorative plaque, which is a replica of one to be displayed on the wall. The four honorees also received a “free ticket for life” to any Golden Bears home sporting event, exclusive of region and state competitions. HIES Director of Admissions Chris Pomar and primary school teacher Heather Hingson accepted the award on behalf of Stacy Maxwell, who was out of town at a friend’s wedding.
Griffin averaged 16 points, five rebounds and four assists per game while playing for boys’ hoops coach Rick Torbett. He led the team to back-to-back Final Four appearances and his teams won 20 or more games during all four years of his high school career. He went on to play at the University of Missouri for two years.
Maxwell held the record for single-season assists in soccer and was second for single-season goals. She was the all-time leader in goals, assists and overall scoring.
Tyler was a four-year team captain and goalkeeper for the soccer squads. At one time, he was the all-time shutout leader at Holy Innocents’; he also led the team to its first ever state championship. After graduation, he went on to play at Davidson (N.C.) College.
Vitale was a career .402 hitter, first in all-time hits, second in homers, second in runs scored, first in triples, second in stolen bases and fifth overall in runs batted in. He led the Bears to their first Final Four appearance his senior year. He went on to play at the College of Charleston.
