It’s usually a fairly simple brew of meat, spices and tomato, and the occasional bean.

But every cook who has ever made chili has his or her own version. On Oct. 27, Roswell is inviting anyone who enjoys concocting a delicious chili to put their recipe up for tasting by the public and judges at the 3rd annual Chili Cook-Off.

“Any clubs, teams, organizations or individuals are welcome. All you need is a great representative that loves to cook, or at least thinks they make the best chili around,” said A.J. Argentina of Roswell’s Art Center West. The Cook-Off is from 1 to 3 p.m. at Leita Thompson Memorial Park on Ga. Hwy 92 in Roswell.

“The majority of cooks entered as amateurs last year, and were simply out to earn bragging rights for the best chili in town. The types of chili that the participants made were just as diverse as the people that made them.”

Creativity in chili-making for the contest is encouraged. All ingredients are valid, but participants must submit a list. No ingredients or recipes will be given out unless the cook wants to share.

Chili should be made off site and at least two gallons brought to the event to heat and serve by 1 p.m. A heat source can include a number of different methods including traditional propane camp stove or grill. There will be no electricity or running water available.

Participants must furnish their own cookware and serving utensils. Little “extras” such as cornbread or cheese to complement chili servings are optional but welcome.

There is no entry fee but registration must be completed by Oct. 13. If just sampling the results rather than cooking sounds more appealing, cost for all the chili you want to taste is $20 and includes a handmade ceramic bowl made by the Roswell Clay Collective group and $5 worth of tickets to purchase additional items such as drinks, ice cream, games and clay activities.

This year’s event will also have pottery activities courtesy of the Clay Collective, tree climbing hosted by Hank Blaustein’s Tree for All, live music by 14-year old local musician Nick Howrey and more for the whole family.
