Jeremy Cole has had huge success with his book “The Boy Who Cried Ug,” and Rob Ray Taylor recently released the novel “Esther’s Mirror.”
Cole authored and illustrated his first children’s book. The book was initially published in 2005, but about a year and a half ago, Cole created an e-book version.
“I had no clue what I was doing in terms of an e-book,” said Cole. “I put it up for sale for 99 cents, and before I knew it, it just took off.”
Cole has sold more than 16,000 electronic copies of the book, which has a plot which is a twist on the old “boy who cried wolf” theme.
Currently, the Shelton Elementary School third-grade teacher is working on a sequel to “The Boy Who Cried Ug.” He also just finished another children’s book, “The Delightfully Delicious Dilemma.”
Cole said he has been writing and drawing all his life.
“This is just my hobby on the side,” said the Hiram resident. “Teaching is my calling. I’m not giving up on that at all, but I would like to publish a book a year for awhile to see what happens.”
Cole is married with three children and active with Boy Scouts and West Ridge Church.
The author also has interactive elements to go along with the book on his website, www.jeremycolebooks.com, including coloring pages from the book and drawing tutorials.
“I’m finding that as an author and illustrator, I want to inspire kids to illustrate and write,” said Cole. “The more of myself I put into this, the more I see kids respond.”
Taylor’s novel is less lighthearted in nature.
“It’s a story about end-time prophecy,” said Taylor.
End-time prophecy refers to the return of Jesus Christ as stated in the Bible.
Taylor said he was inspired by the best-selling novel “The Shack,” to write a spiritual fiction novel.
“At first I was going to write it as a commentary, but I thought, ‘Hey, more people would read this if I put it in story form,’” Taylor said.
The Dallas resident said the book is based in Scripture. He started writing it in 2010, finished it in May, and released it Aug. 15. So far, he said he has sold about 100 copies personally.
Taylor said the Bible states there will be many natural disasters before Jesus’ return, and 2011 saw a record number of natural disasters around the world.
As for whether or not the world is going to end any time soon?
“You’ll have to buy “Esther’s Mirror,” said Taylor.
