DeKalb County board of elections officials are cautioning residents eyeing the polls next month to be conscious of the looming voter registration deadline.

With the general election about a month away, voter education campaigns — do’s, don’ts and all other pertinent information — are being undertaken by the proper authorities.

Those intent on voting on election day must be registered by Oct. 9. Early in-person voting begins Oct. 15.

Residents who receive a yellow precinct card in the mail are good to go — others not so much, said DeKalb County Voter Registration and Elections Director H. Maxine Daniels.

“If [residents] received a yellow precinct card in the mail, they clearly don’t have to do anything — they’re fine,” Daniels said. “If you voted in 2008 and nothing has changed in regards to address and so forth, you’re fine … it takes about eight years for your name to be taken off the roll.”

Those wishing to make any changes via mail must submit required documentation postmarked Oct. 9 at the latest.

Residents can register to vote at the board’s office at 4380 Memorial Drive in Decatur from 8 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“We will register them on the spot and give them information where to go in terms of [their respective polling locations],” Daniels said. “If they’ve already registered and are sitting at home unsure of anything, we encourage them to go to the website — www.dekalbvotes.com — to verify whether or not they need to do anything instead of spending money on expensive gas to come here to find out.”

Elections board officials report increased voter registration activity traffic since the Democratic and Republican national conventions.

“We’ve had a very steady flow and we expect it to increase dramatically, especially October 8 and 9, which is normal,” Daniels said. “On the last days [leading up to the deadline], we usually have people lined up in the hallways.”
