A youth empowerment summit geared towards educating and uplifting teenagers ages 13 to 19 will take place in College Park Oct. 27.

Talks scheduled for the summit include segments dedicated to tackling tough issues of teen dating violence, teen pregnancy, as well as cultivation of self-worth, self-esteem and confidence.

The brainchild behind the summit is Beverly Robinson, president and founder of Healing in His Wings, a nonprofit with the sole goal of promoting holistic health to women and children.

“The primary thing is to think about holistic health, which is being well in your mind, body and spirit,” Robinson said. “We want to address each area of their personhood. During the Color Me Confident summit, we will also look at things that robbed them of their confidence and who they are.”

A treasure box session follows the chat on confidence to get teens to “recognize the treasure that is within you.”

Robinson said the latter part of the summit is formatted into team-building exercises, with breakout sessions focusing on the intricacies and complexities of teenage relationships.

“There are a lot of workshops on relationships in terms of how we relate to people and what affect how we relate to them,” said Robinson.

The summit will conclude with a real-talk session which will allow teens to ask questions about their concerns and situations that affect everyday life.

Robinson referred to the talk as a “no judgment zone.”

“The goal of it is that they get factual and correction information on those things they come into contact with,” she said.

At the root of all the grievances teens will discuss at the summit is Robinson’s core mission with her nonprofit — living life more abundantly.

“I see a lot of hopelessness in the youth because of adolescence,” she said. “I have seen the risky behavior. The root is what people have to get to. I am passionate about people being able to live life on purpose, not to feel like life is not for them and to not know their value.”

This is the third summit of its type held and Robinson hopes the event will eventually become a quarterly one.

“Our goal is to host it quarterly in areas of metro Atlanta and to move into other cities in Georgia and other states,” she said.
