New Sandy Springs venue hosts variety of musicians

Steve Grossman opened Steve’s Live Music in Sandy Springs in June. Since then, the venue has hosted four sold-out concerts.

“The idea was that we needed something in this area of town, kind of like an Eddie’s Attic [in Decatur],” the Sansy Springs resident said. “There’s nothing here for singer/songwriters.”

Before opening Steve’s Live Music, Grossman had been hosting house concerts at his home for about 10 years.

The new venue is at 234 Hildebrand Drive and holds 120 audience members. For now, it is open Tuesday through Saturday.

Tuesday nights feature bluegrass artists, Wednesdays are dedicated to international folk artists, blues musicians are welcomed on Thursdays and Fridays and Saturdays are reserved for singer/songwriters.

“We embrace all styles of music,” said Grossman.

Steve’s Live Music has hosted Caribbean steel bands, Russian bands and will host a belly dance troupe Oct. 24.

“We’re getting people from Ireland, Boston and Chicago, but also local musicians,” said Grossman, a former accountant who has a love for music and plays the banjo in his free time.

“Atlanta’s got tremendous talent for singer/songwriters, yet there’s nowhere to play,” he said. “Booking’s not a problem. People are knocking down the doors to play.”

Ed Roland, lead singer of Collective Soul, will play with his new band, The Bonaventure Quartet, Dec. 14. “That show’s practically sold out,” said Grossman.

Collective Soul’s bass player, Will Turpin, will play solo Nov. 2.

In addition to music, the venue also serves food and has a full bar.

“It’s all good food — all fish and vegetables,” said Grossman.

Dishes include fish tacos, flatbreads, meatless mini burgers, corn cakes and a portabella sandwich.

In terms of moving forward with the venue, Grossman said he is considering keeping the venue booked all week.

“We’re going to take a look at the model and see what the next steps are,” he said. “We are looking at opening Sunday and Monday.”
