Kari Hodge has fond memories of Agan’s Bakery, a downtown Cartersville staple.

As a child she recalls frequent visits and chief among her most memorable involved owner Jimmy Agan.

Over the years Hodge said she has come to know Agan personally and counts him among her friends and biggest supporters.

Hodge said the circle of those touched by Agan and his generosity continues to grow by leaps and bounds.

“I don’t think the community knows all that he does,” Hodge said.

Hodge said she believes there are many in Bartow County who have not only enjoyed the baked goods at Agan’s but also have earned their working stripes there as well.

“Can you imagine the amount of young people he has put to work?” Hodge asked. “That’s kind of a stepping stone for our workforce.”

Hodge said she counts herself among the many who call Agan a mentor who has set an example for others in the community.

“He’s one of the most giving and generous individuals I know,” Hodge said. “He’s been a rock around downtown. He just holds a special place in the hearts of many.”

Hodge said when she heard of the health issues Agan has been battling recently, she wanted to help.

Hodge is organizing a pancake breakfast Saturday from 7:45 to 10 a.m. at her business, Swheat Market Deli, to raise money for the Agan family.

Tickets are $9, cash only, and include pancakes, sausage and orange juice or coffee. Tickets are available at Swheat Market, Cody J’s, Mission Tire and Agan’s.

All money collected through the breakfast will be donated to the Agan family.

Hodge said the benefit breakfast is a way for the community to rally behind Agan and his family.

“In my eyes, after all he’s done, he’s earned and deserves some love,” Hodge said. “He has a grateful heart anyway, and I think he would be floored to see his community surrounding him.”
