Up five points with less than a minute to play against South Forsyth last Friday, Centennial coach Jeff Carlberg called on his defense for one final game-changing play.

Senior safety Kola Balogun answered that call.

With the War Eagles threatening on the Knights’ 38-yardline, Balogun picked off a South Forsyth pass and returned in 65 yards for a game-sealing touchdown.

“It was a huge play with 35 seconds left to secure the win,” said Carlberg of Balogun’s pick in the 22-10 victory. “We had three interceptions in the game and that was by far the biggest one.”

Strong secondary play, according to Carlberg, has been the key to a resurgent Centennial defense over the last two weeks. After allowing an average of 43.5 points per game in their first five losses, the Knight defense has allowed just 17 total points during their two-game winning streak — and hasn’t allowed a passing touchdown in either contest.

“That’s been the key in these two games. I think we only gave up one pass completion against Lambert, then made a bunch of huge plays in the secondary [against South Forsyth],” said Carlberg. “Kola’s play has been a big part of that, it’s only his first year playing football but he is doing a great job for us back there.”
