Company J performs its final three shows of “The Fantasticks” at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta Saturday and Sunday.

The show, which is known among the theater community as the world’s longest running musical, debuted at the center Oct. 20.

The storyline centers around the lives of a teenage boy and girl who live next door to each other and whose fathers try to keep them apart, said Rich Reynell, of Dunwoody, who stars as the boy‘s father, Huckabee. Hinting to the plot, he said that kids can be known to rebel against their parents.

“It’s a very light musical comedy,” Reynell said.

The show features tunes including “Try to Remember,” “Soon It’s Going to Rain” and “Metaphor.”

“Everybody would recognize most songs in the play,” he said.

The performers — a cast of seven — are accompanied by the piano, cello and harp.

“The harp really adds to it,” Reynell said.

He said those who come to see “The Fantasticks” will leave with the story and the music stuck in their memories. Company J will finish its production with a show Saturday at 8 p.m. and shows Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m.

The play is suitable for all ages, and tickets range from $15 to $25.

The center will host a newcomers’ reception Saturday at 7 p.m. to allow those new to the Atlanta area to mingle with others who share an interest in theater.

Although Reynell is not a newcomer to Atlanta or to theater, this production of “The Fantasticks” is his first local performance, he said.

Prior to moving to the Atlanta area 20 years ago, he was involved in the New York theater scene, even playing the same role of Huckabee in a production of “The Fantasticks” about 40 years ago, he said.
