Westminster advanced to the Class AA state volleyball semifinals and Mason Rooney is a big reason.

The sophomore setter/right-side hitter led the way for the Lady Wildcats in the their first- and second-round wins in the state tournament.

Rooney had 12 aces, 10 assists, four digs and three kills in Westminster’s first-round victory over Harlem on Oct. 17, then had 11 assists, six kills and six aces in the Lady Wildcats’ second-round win over Early County last Tuesday.

Westminster was awarded the second seed at a GHSA reseeding meeting last Wednesday and got a bye in the quarterfinals, advancing the Lady Wildcats automatically to the semifinals. Rooney had made a impact for Westminster this season in only her second year of varsity volleyball, amassing 158 kills, 91 aces, 114 digs, 317 assists and 24 blocks.

Rooney’s performance is no surprise to coach Jona Braden, who points out her dedication to improving as a volleyball player. “She has a great work ethic,” Braden said. “She is continually working hard to get better. She is a big reason why we have been successful this season.”
