Three area volleyball teams are still standing, having earned berths in today’s Georgia High School Association semifinals.

Marist, St. Pius X and Lakeside all remained in the hunt by dispatching their respective state quarterfinals foes over the weekend.

Next up is the latest hurdle — even stiffer competition for the right to advance to the championship round.

St. Pius X has the formidable task of trying to upend Woodward Academy on the Lady War Eagles home floor.

The Lady Golden Lions have the talent and experience to pull it off. By all appearances, this contest should go down to the wire.

Match start time: 5:30 p.m.

Whoever wins will advance to play the winner of a later match pitting Blessed Trinity against Oconee County. The state title game is scheduled to take place at Marietta High School on Saturday.

Marist, hosting the 4-A final four, will square off with Columbus.

This Lady War Eagles team, anchored by middle blocker Alex Nagle, is likely to give the visitors all they can handle. Senior libero Julia Simon, senior setter Clara Horner and junior outside hitter Bailey Weiland have been a potent collective that could push Marist through to the final round.

Match start time: 5:30 p.m.

Should Marist advance it will take on the winner of Sandy Creek – SE Whitfield in the championship match, also set for Saturday at Marietta High.

Class AAAAA

Lakeside-DeKalb, making its first ever final four appearance, will take on traditional powerhouse Whitewater.

The Lady Vikings, led by senior setter Jenny Miller, are in the midst of an incredible postseason run.

Lakeside took out a 38-1 Greenbrier team in the last round en route to the semifinals. The Lady Vikings launched an improbable comeback in the previous round, rallying from an 0-2 hole to send Houston County packing.

Match start time: 7:30 p.m.

The winner will face the survivor of the McIntosh vs. Starrs Mill tilt in the state title match, scheduled for Monday at McEachern High School.
