The event will include sessions on understanding government benefits, examining personal assets, maximizing employee benefits, and other finance- and benefit-related topics that are crucial to living with the progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
M. Bryan Freeman, the principal of Buckhead-based Habersham Funding, LLC, will tell symposium attendees how seriously ill people can convert their life insurance policies into cash or long-term care benefits. Freeman also has helped coordinate many of the other financial and benefits topics for the meeting, including a special appearance by David S. Landay, author of “Be Prepared: The Complete Financial, Legal and Practical Guide for Living with a Life-Challenging Condition.”
Other speakers are Barbara Babbit Kaufman, author of “Attitude” and entrepreneur, and Derreck Kayongo, founder of the Global Soap Project and a 2011 CNN Hero.
Other sessions include Newly Diagnosed with ALS and Life Care for People with ALS — Maximizing Independence. Additional featured speakers include Jonathan D. Glass, M.D., professor of neurology at Emory University, and director of the Emory ALS Center; and Michael H. Rivner, M.D., professor of neurology and medical director of the ALS Center of Excellence at the Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta and Macon.
Individuals with ALS and one caregiver may attend the symposium at no charge. Tickets for additional caregivers and other attendees are $35 each, including lunch. After Nov. 5, they rise to $45.
