Willie Candler has emerged as a major offensive threat for Lovett in only his second year of high school football.

The sophomore quarterback showed how much of a key player he has become when he threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Siegel with 6:54 remaining in the game for the winning score in the Lions’ 10-7 victory over archrival Westminster Nov. 2.

In addition to his touchdown pass, Candler completed 9 of 12 passes for 177 yards and rushed for 48 yards on 18 carries.

Candler has taken a major step forward in his development as a quarterback in 2012, completing 89 of 152 passes (58.6 percent) for 1,304 yards and 10 touchdowns — an improvement from the 446 yards passing and three touchdowns he accumulated in his freshman season.

This year he has also contributed to the Lions’ running game with 327 yards on 118 carries and four scores.

“Willie, like our team, is a work in progress,” Lovett coach Mike Muschamp said. “He has continued to work hard and improved as the season has progressed. He has been blessed with a lot of talent and he is working to be the best he can be. A lot of what we are doing is based off of what he can do. He has a strong arm and can put great touch on the ball when needed.”
