Decatur sophomore Wren Ballou
The sophomore co-captain led Decatur to a berth at the GHSA state meet — its first in seven years. As usual, Ballou, the Lady Bulldogs’ No. 1 runner, paced her squad en route to a top 15 finish in Class AAA.
“She’s been really consistent,” said Decatur coach Claire McCarty. “She’s very talented in lots of different aspects.”
“She’s played a big part in bringing our team together,” McCarty added. “She’s our leader in running … she practices hard, she runs hard and it shows.”
Ballou racked up multiple top 10 finishes en route to putting together a stellar year — both individually and as a contributor on an up and coming team.
According to her coach, Ballou is just scratching the surface in terms of her potential.
“She’s improved a lot,” said McCarty. “She’s really focused — distance running takes a different kind of focus than other sports.
“I’m looking forward to her next two years … seeing her make it to state and seeing how much better she can perform.”
