Chamblee hoops standout Candace Rhodes is coming into her own.

After having earned a significant amount of playing time last season, the junior guard has kicked off her 2012-13 campaign with a bang.

Rhodes scored 20 points in the Lady Bulldogs’ 48-46 win over Mundy’s Mill — after having dropped 19 in a 42-36 victory over Jackson County in the Alcovy Thanksgiving Classic.

“Candace played some heavy minutes last year,” said Chamblee coach Paul Ireland. “She can play the point and some 2 (guard) … looking for her to do some good things for us.”

Rhodes, a 5 foot 5 dynamo, will be counted on for her offensive production and leadership on a team in transition after last season’s run to the GHSA Class 4-A Elite 8. Still, if her scoring punch consistently nets nights like the ones she’s had early this season, the Lady Bulldogs could again find themselves right back in the thick of things.

Look for Rhodes and company to try to continue their winning ways, cutting their teeth against inferior squads and hanging tough — playing competitive ball — with the top-flight programs.

As long as she keeps putting the ball in the net, Rhodes’ junior season could turn into something special.
