According to Westlake girls’ basketball coach Hilda Hankerson, junior forward Lauren Turner is free from just focusing on seeing the ball go in the basket.

“She is definitely able to understand the flow of the game—play offense and defense,” Hankerson said. “A lot of kids when they first come in are more offensive minded. You got to train them to be defensive minded. Now, she is starting to put those two together and become a more complete ball player.”

Turner also believes she is mentally tougher.

“I think I’ve got better at staying focused,” she said. “Not getting frustrated because that comes with being mature as an athlete.”

Therefore with her head in the right place and her ball handling on point, Turner feels she can be tough to stop in transition.

“I’m almost six feet so I want to scare people when I’m coming down the court dribbling,” said Turner, who is on the perimeter more this year.

“Lauren has a lot of outstanding potential and has a great possibility of moving on and playing ball at the next level,” Hankerson said.

Turner has a 3.0 grade-point average and wants to major in kinesiology while playing college basketball.
