Darryl Stewart has provided a big offensive boost in the backcourt for Holy Innocents’ this season.

The 6-foot-1 junior guard, who is in his first year at the school after moving from Los Angeles, is leading the team in scoring with about 16 points a game and has been a key factor in the Golden Bears’ 10-3 start as of last Thursday.

Stewart has scored 20 points or more in several games, including a season-high 29 in a 71-50 victory over Landmark Christian Nov. 21, 22 in a 71-65 overtime loss to Brookwood Dec. 3 and 20 each in a 56-46 win over Wesleyan Dec. 15 and a 67-54 victory over St. Francis — a game in which he also grabbed 11 rebounds — Nov. 18.

Stewart continued his stellar performance at the Holiday Hoops Classic in Memphis, Tenn., in late December, scoring 13 points and dishing out six assists in a 42-40 win over Fayette (Tenn.) and being selected to the all-tournament team.

“Darryl has really been a key player for us,” Holy Innocents’ coach Terry Kelly said. “He has the potential to play on the college level — he’s a mid-[Division I] kid. He’s a good shooter and he has a good basketball IQ. He’s also a good defensive player.”
