After fellow junior Kathleen Cook set the school record in the 100 butterfly, Cooper trumped that with a time of 59.56.
“I was excited,” Cooper said. “It was fun.”
“Caitlin is extraordinarily dedicated especially for her age,” Woodward swim coach Kelsey Emerson said. “She puts in many hours a week, including two-a-day practices.”
Even though junior Rebecca Justus would top Cooper’s mark with a time of 59.42 in the 100 butterfly on Jan. 23, Cooper would set the school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59.92 on the same day.
“Caitlin is one of the two top point-scorers on the team,” said Emerson of Cooper, who finished first in the 50 freestyle at the state finals last season. “She seems to be an inspiration to the rest of the team.”
Cooper, who has been swimming since age 6 and a member of the varsity team since ninth grade, said her technique and efficiency has improved.
With a 3.5 grade-point average and an interest in education, Cooper wants to swim for a Division-I school out West.
