In the Cardinals’ 62-51 win over the Eagles, Okeke, whose first name means “God guide me” in Nigerian, had 14 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks.
“I guess I was just more active and aggressive,” Okeke said.
“He’s been big for us,” Maehlman said. “We’re going to need not just him but all the guys to step up now that we are getting close to the region tournament. They have to step their games up a little bit more so we can achieve our goal for this year.”
Specifically for Okeke that means not just finishing strong around the basket but blocking shots, rebounding and protecting the paint.
“We wouldn’t be where we are without him,” Maehlman said. It’s not many kids in the state who can allow your guards to get out and gamble a little bit because they know he is standing back there to either block or alter a shot.”
Okeke has a 3.2 grade-point and will play basketball at Winthrop next year.
