Butker was among the 17 athletes from the Buckhead school who inked on the dotted line to continue their athletic careers on the college level.
“It feels great,” Butker said. “I’ve always dreamed of playing in college, so it’s a dream come true.”
After considering a number of NCAA Division I colleges — including Auburn, Kentucky and Boston College — Butker decided to stay closer to home at the end and chose to commit to Georgia Tech last November.
“I liked the coaching staff and I’ve always been a Tech fan,” he said. “I like the way they run things there, both their academics and sports.”
In his three seasons as Westminster’s kicker, Butker made 41 of 43 point-after attempts and 28 of 38 field goal tries, while missing only one field goal less than 48 yards.
Also signing on National Signing Day was track and cross country standout Sahara Fletcher, who inked with Ohio State.
“Initially, I thought that I wouldn’t like [Ohio State], but I went up there and I loved the team and the coaches were great,” she said. “They seemed to care about the development of the student as a person and not just as an athlete.”
Fletcher won three consecutive state cross country championships from 2009 through ’11. In track, she claimed titles in the 3,200-meter run in ’10 and ’11, the 1,600 run in ’10 and ’12 and the 800 in ’12.
Westminster also had a couple of signees from its 2012 state girls’ swimming championship team. Nicole Stafford — a three-time champion in the 200-yard freestyle — signed with Stanford and Jamie Christy inked with Southern California.
Other Division I signees from the school are diver Gaffney Taylor (Tennessee), soccer player Marshall Glover (Stanford), golfers Tripp H’Doubler (Missouri) and Jackson Heazel (Baylor) and crew members Morgan Bean (Harvard) and Leigh Shanor (Boston University).
Also signing from Westminster were baseball players Chip Capper (Georgia Perimeter College) and Merritt Huber (Wofford), basketball player Robert Howell (Emory at Oxford), football player Tripp Riddle (Rhodes College), soccer player Tanner Kaplan (Wofford), track athlete Sam Allen (Rhodes College) and wrestler Justin Geeza (Wabash College).
Other local signees are North Atlanta football player Amon-Ra Clay (Virginia Military Institute), Riverwood football player Sheldon Doyle (Briar Cliffe College) and Lovett volleyball player Maggie Sinkler (Wake Forest), who signed her letter-of-intent on Thursday.
