Not only does NC State have another great wrestler in Chad Pyke on its roster but the team has the nation’s all-time leader in wins as well.

At the Class AAA West Sectional in Ringgold last Saturday, Woodward’s Pyke scored his 325th career victory to break the national high school record.

Pyke, who wrestles at 160 pounds, added one more win to his resume for an 86-2 mark this season and will compete for his second straight state title in Macon this weekend.

“Chad has been a huge part of Woodward’s program,” said wrestling coach Pete Fritts prior to the trip to Ringgold. “He has almost entirely rewritten all the record books and has been a great leader for our underclassmen.

“His work ethic is unparalleled,” Fritts said. “He is not the best athlete I’ve ever coach but he is the hardest worker and that’s what gets you to the top in life.”

As far as his decision to attend NC State, Pyke said the coaching staff’s philosophy of excellence in all facets of life was the deciding factor.

“The best thing about wrestling on the next level is having the opportunity to get better and train with some of the best guys in the country,” Pyke said.

"Chad will enjoy the training and getting the most out of his ability," Fritts said. "The team concept will also be a big thing for him."
