Union Grove’s Griffin Higginbotham’s resume speaks for itself.

The Wolverines senior already has one individual state wrestling title under his belt. And, his win-loss record — including a 51-3 mark this season — is stellar, to say the least.

Before hanging up his prep singlet, Higginbotham will look to add more hardware to his trophy case en route to cementing his legacy.

So, what makes him so good?

“The amount of time and training he’s put in,” said Union Grove coach Matt Ferrari. “He travels and wrestles all over the country in the offseason … he just knows what it takes.”

The Wolverines standout is set to make his final appearance at the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Meet, which gets underway Thursday in Macon, after winning his 126-pound class at Sectionals over the weekend.

To break down Higginbotham’s mat game is to assess a unique talent who’s well on his way to mastering his craft.

“He gets lots of pins … but in the big matches, he’s won just about every way you can,” said Ferrari. “He’s very good on his feet … very smooth, never gets out of position.”

Mistakes are a rarity, indeed.

“Griffin knows how to not give up points,” the coach noted. “Good wrestlers flow like water … and he does that, from one [move] to the next.

“[Opponents] may know what he’s going to do, but they can’t stop him.”
