High school basketball region tournament time is essentially the prelude to the big dance.

Over in girls’ Class AAAA ball, look for Woodland to break in their dancing shoes this week.

The Lady Wolfpack, unblemished in Region 4-A play after 14 contests, appear to be peaking at the right time … if there is such a thing for a team that’s only dropped one game all season.

Woodland’s pick-your-poison lineup has been steamrolling opposing teams as of late — including recent lopsided wins over Region 4, Division A foes Eagle’s Landing, Dutchtown, Locust Grove and Stockbridge.

All-World slash player (forward/wing/point guard) Morgan Jones is looking to end her prep career on top and she’s playing like it. The same for fellow senior standouts 2-guard Care Bacon, combo guard Lindsey Reed, and center Nicole Findura. Junior guard Mecca Sneed has also been a revelation among the squad’s supporting cast.

Woodland has reeled off 23 straight victories since a mid-November 12-point setback to McIntosh. While there are decisive wins aplenty (see their 90-14 and 70-13 wins over a pair of Henry rivals) on their 2012-13 resume, the Lady Wolfpack have also gutted out a few close wins — experiences that will benefit them on their probable deep postseason run.

Barring some unforeseen upsets for both squads in an early round matchup, the safe money is on the Lady Wolfpack tussling with Division B-leading Jonesboro in the Region 4-AAAA final.

If it were to materialize, that matchup has all the makings of a classic. The Lady Cardinals would likely have revenge on their minds, considering Woodland is responsible for the former’s only defeat in league play this season — by way of a 57-50 win back on Dec. 4.

Luella is capable of making noise in the Region 2-AAAAAA tourney.

The Lady Lions played Woodland tough, registering losses decided by a total of just 12 points in their two head-to-head matchups this season.
