Ola placed third overall in Class 5-A competition.
The Mustangs were paced by reigning 195-pound state champ Jimmy Carman, who finished third in his division behind champ Trevor Stevens of Pope and Starr’s Luke Runyan. Ola teammate Ean Wilson reached the semifinals at 145 pounds, losing to eventual runner-up Isaac King from Ware County.
Locust Grove also turned in a solid showing against the state’s best, placing seventh in Class AAAA action.
The Wildcats were led by a talented quintet of wrestlers in Macon. First up, 132-pounder Peter Baus reached the semifinal round before losing to eventual champ Rhett Hembree of Carrollton. Brandoin Benson also wrestled his way to the 145-pound final four, where he fell to Hembree’s teammate and eventual runner-up Turner Martin.
Emillio Conde, also wrestling under the Locust Grove banner, had a similar fate — scrapping his way to the 152-pound semifinals before dropping a match to Carrollton’s Taylor Lujan, the eventual titlist. The Wildcats’ Jacob Austin also got that far in the 170-pound division, losing to eventual champ Alexander’s Deandre Sims. Locust Grove’s Tyler Rapes also lost to the eventual champion in Southeast Whitfield’s Carlos Fraire in their final four match at 220 pounds.
