The city recently completed a visioning study and master plan for the area along Highway 9 between Mayfield Road to Bethany Bend and now wants to finish out that corridor.
“When we undertook that study we realized that we essentially did not include this area up here,” said Community Development Director Kathleen Field. She said now she and the rest of staff are trying to get an idea of what the community wants to see as far as style and use.
Many who attended the Feb. 13 visioning meeting expressed concern about the area of land directly across from Cambridge High School. The land is currently zoned as single-family residential, and Field said because of changes in the area she wanted to get feedback from the community to see if that zoning is still appropriate. There is a rezoning application going through the process right now to allow an assisted living facility and unattached townhomes.
“If the zoning doesn’t come about, we’re back to this [single family homes] and I’d like some feedback,” Field said.
Walkability was also a concern, and Public Works Director Carter Lucas said “complete streets” is something designers keep in mind when looking at an area like Highway 9.
“From a city standpoint, what we’ve been working on this year is to try to identify where we have these sidewalk gaps,” he said. The city has about $250,000 in the budget this year for sidewalks. There is also funding from a MARTA grant available for sidewalks.
City Planner Michele McIntosh-Ross said in addition to finding out the kind of development uses citizens want, the city also wants to find out specific styles citizens want so they can design a form based zoning code.
“This focuses on the look of a building as opposed to the use,” McIntosh-Ross said. “The idea is that the look is important.”
The Feb. 13 meeting gave an opportunity through several exercises to express what style and what use they would want for future development. There will be a follow-up meeting March 27 to present the recommendations for feedback.
