The Holy Innocents’ senior and American University wrestling signee claimed his second state title in a row as he won the 182-pound weight class and helped lead the Golden Bears to a runner-up team finish in Class A at the GHSA tournament in Macon Feb. 16.
Grimes won all three of his matches by pin, defeating Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy’s Christian Spencer in the quarterfinals and Commerce’s Cole Sweeney in the semifinals before beating Gordon Lee’s Shane Farmer in the championship match.
Grimes also won the Class A state title at 170 pounds last year.
It was the perfect end to a successful senior season for Grimes, who posted a 43-1 individual record and won the Area 4A championship at 182.
“Jason worked hard this year and he justified that hard work with a state championship,” Holy Innocents’ wrestling coach Stacey Davis said.
Grimes was also a football standout at Holy Innocents’. He was a first-team Class A All-State selection at defensive back by the Georgia Sports Writers Association in 2012.
