The Paulding County 4-H Horse and Pony Club will host its annual Spring Fling Saturday to help raise funds and promote the organization for young equine enthusiasts.

The event is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tractor Supply Co. store off U.S. Hwy. 278 in Dallas.

It will feature horse and pony rides, carnival games and crafts and a free community-wide Easter egg hunt, said Volunteer Leader Annette Raybon.

Organizers are expecting a good turnout since they are hosting an Easter egg hunt four weeks before Easter, which should keep them from overlapping with most church-sponsored hunts, she said.

The event can raise up to $1,800 in a good year, Raybon said.

“This is what supports our club,” she said.

Money raised will also help send students to the state 4-H horse show competition in Perry in June.

This is the eighth year they have hosted the event. The goal is to have around 200 to 300 attendees, Raybon said.

“The [club members] help with all the events,” she said.

Also the event is used to allow children to interact with the horses and learn about the group, said club president Kaitlyn Gilroy, 16, daughter of Kathleen and Edward Gilroy.

“We definitely want to invite kids to our 4-H group,” she said.

The 93-member club is a project organization which teaches children about horses, Raybon said.

Children ages 5 through 18 can join. They do not have to own a horse to be a member and it costs only $20 a year to join, Raybon said.

Raybon allows members to come to her home to use her riding arena, barn and horses, she said.

There are usually five to six children at her house every day to work with the horses.

“We could not do it without our parent and grandparent volunteers,” Raybon said.

She said they have 35 volunteers.
