he New Manchester boys are the 5-AAAAA Region champions and were the No. 1 seed going into the state playoffs.

The team went on a 10-game win streak to close out the regular season and added two more wins in the region tournament.

While it was a team effort, head coach David Cottrell named Keymont Jenkins as being the key player.

At 6-foot-4, Jenkins is a senior “guard forward” for the team averaging 16.6 points and 3.8 rebounds a night.

Cottrell said Jenkins’ consistency is what made the difference for him and the team this season.

“His defensive force, making shots and being a leader by example. He competes and works hard in practice and games and his consistency with that has really improved,” said Cottrell.

Cottrell described Jenkins as being a “quiet guy” but said when he does speak he has the respect of his teammates and they listen.

In winning the region championship, Jenkins said it felt good knowing the program is still brand new. “It felt good [to win] cause it’s a second year program and my first year making it this far. We worked hard at practice and finished the game,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins said his best game from this season, other than winning the region, was winning in the semifinals against Allatoona as the team was able to recover from the loss they suffered to the Buccaneers earlier in the year. “They beat us earlier in the season and were No. 1 in the region. We didn’t play as good the first time, but this time we came out, played and got the win,” Jenkins said.
