With every starter returning from last year’s state runner-up team, it was expected that Blessed Trinity would kick off the 2013 season looking as polished as any club in the state.

But through the season’s first month, polished has been an understatement.

In five games the Lady Titans have been nothing short of dominant, outscoring their opponents by a combined score of 25-0.

“This is one of the best starts we have ever had,” said Blessed Trinity soccer coach Gil Jean-Baptiste, who helped BT claim state championships in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010. “The girls came out and were really in sync from the start. I’m definitely satisfied with what we have done on the field so far, and satisfied with the way we have done it.”

Blessed Trinity’s wins include a 6-0 victory over Atlanta International to open the season, a 5-0 win against 2012 Class-A runner-up Fellowship Christian, and a 1-0 victory at defending AAAAA state champion Milton.

“We had no seniors last year so we have pretty much the same team as last year with a few additions mixed in,” said the BT coach, whose team went 15-4-2 last year before losing to GAC in the Class AA state championship.

“We are much more mature this year and we see that in both practice and games. We are closing out games, aren’t making the silly mistakes we made in the past and the girls are playing with a ton of focus.”

Jean-Baptiste said senior captains Allyease Schwartz (defense), Grace Demaska (midfield) and Indy Wildschut (forward) have led the team to their early success, but noted that underclassmen Julia Gaston (defense), Meredith Carson (goalkeeper), Delaney Fechalos (forward) and others have made significant contributions on what he described as a very deep and talented roster.

“We have a really strong nucleus, are well-rounded and so far I haven’t seen many weaknesses,” he said. “But it is still very early and we’ll know a lot more about this team when we get into the thick of region play.”

Moving into region 6AAA this year, Blessed Trinity is leaving old rivals Westminster and GAC behind while new foes include the likes of Woodward Academy and St. Pius X.

“It will be interesting to see what happens this year against those teams,” said Jean-Baptiste. “But our goals never change. We’re focused on making the playoffs first and foremost. Once we do that we feel like we will be in good shape and ready to make some noise.”

BT will play a region game at Cedar Grove tomorrow before returning home to host Woodward Academy next Tuesday.
