The Dallas City Council last week voted 4-2 in favor of giving residents the option of Sunday sales.
Ward Three Councilman R. Griffin White motioned for the action. He said he wanted to give residents a chance to vote on the subject.
If voters in unincorporated Paulding County approve Sunday sales in Tuesday’s special election, Dallas will be the only area in Paulding in which residents could not buy packaged alcohol that day.
“I don’t want to shortchange Dallas,” White said.
Two large supermarket chains have requested Sunday sales, he said.
Sales should also bring tax revenue to the community, White said.
Councilman at Large James Kelly and Ward Two Councilman Michael Cason voted against allowing a public vote.
Kelly said, “I think if they cannot get enough [alcohol] in the week I don’t think an extra day on Sunday is going to make a difference.”
Just because the other parts of the county sell alcoholic beverages does not mean Dallas should, he said. Even with the taxes the city would receive Kelly does not see it as a reason to bring Sunday sales into the city limits, he said.
“I don’t think money is the answer to all things,” Kelly said.
He said if all decisions were based on money it would lead to general moral decay. It may also lead to other vices being allowed to take root in the city.
Cason agreed with Kelly.
“They can buy it [alcohol] six days a week,” Cason said. “You can’t give me one 24-hour stretch?”
