Last week, the city of Alpharetta held the first of two meetings designed to gain community input on Main Street.

The city will hold the second Envision Main Street design meeting — for Ga. 9 from Old Milton Parkway to Windward Parkway — Tuesday from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Devore House at 34 Church Street.

Once again, Alpharetta and Milton residents affected by the plan are invited to attend the charette-style meeting.

The sessions are designed to allow residents to drop in and participate for as long as they want.

Community members can weigh in on transportation, long-term planning goals, aesthetics and more.

At last Wednesday’s meeting, residents were able to meet with department heads from the city’s public works and transportation departments and comment on design elements by filling out surveys.

Residents saw concept drawings of potential bike lanes, sidewalks, lane widths and other specifications; attendees could leave comments on the depictions.

Based on comments left, residents seemed in favor of outdoor dining areas and sheltered bus stops. Comments on the inclusion of a median near South Main Street and Old Milton Parkway were less enthusiastic, and some residents commented that a bike lane with a barrier would be a dangerous idea.

According to city spokesman James Drinkard, city staff will take the feedback gained at these two meetings and through an online survey and will create a design for the future of Main Street that will be presented to the community on April 8 at the city’s regular council meeting.

Drinkard said city council members want to know what the community wants to see along the road instead of allowing the Georgia Department of Transportation to design and fund a project on its own.
