Lithia Springs players are still signing scholarships and letters of intent to play college football as Zack Kidd and Kalil Talps put ink to paper last week in front of teammates, friends and family.

The first to sign was Talps, a three-year starter for the Lions.

Playing his first varsity game for Lithia Springs as a freshman, Talps has played every position on the field except quarterback. according to head coach Scott Dean. Talps signed a four-year scholarship to Alabama State University in Montgomery, Ala.

Talps, who is listed at 6 feet and 190 pounds, also considered the new program at Berry College near Rome, as well as LaGrange College in LaGrange and Tusculum College in Tusculum, Tenn. However, Talps said there were several things about Alabama State which helped him decide.

“I have a good relationship with the coaches. I would get ample playing time and they have my degree – criminal justice,” said Talps.

Talps also was able to get a feel for campus life during visits to watch his brother – Vincent Butler – run track. Lastly, Talps said former teammates attend Alabama State as well.

Talps will be competing for a spot at outside linebacker against a senior, two juniors and a freshman.

Kidd is the third signee for Lithia Springs this year and will be attending and playing for Averett University in Danville, Va., after signing a partial scholarship.

Kidd, who is listed as 6-foot-1 and 290 pounds, also played for the Lions since he was a freshman and made the varsity team as a junior at left tackle.

According to Dean, Kidd was “just a big guy” when he first joined the team, but later was able to really use his size. While at Lithia Springs, Kidd broke and set many lifting records at the school – bench at 425 pounds, squats at 555, dead lift at 545 and power cling 285.

Kidd also considered Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, Mississippi College in Clinton, Miss. and Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.

“I had more resources at Averett and many more opportunities,” said Kidd.

In light of getting a scholarship, Kidd said he would like to thank his parents and coaches for everything they’ve done.
