A new “star” will rise on the Clayton County Parks and Recreation Department horizon March 30 with the real beneficiary being the residents of the southern portion of the county.

Although a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. March 30 to open the new South Clayton Recreation Center, 1837 McDonough Road in Hampton, Amy Keeney, marketing and communications officer for the Clayton Country Department of Parks and Recreation, said that event will actually be preceded by a “soft” opening as the center March 25 at 9 a.m.

“This soft grand opening will allow residents to tour the facility that was paid for with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds,” Keeney said.

Clayton County District 3 Commissioner Shana Rooks, in whose district the new center lies, will lead an entourage of county and city government officials at the official Saturday ribbon-cutting.

The 60,000 square-foot center, the result of a joint partnership between the Clayton County Board of Commissioners and the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department, was built to serve the needs of Clayton residents, “by providing a center that is safe and friendly and where all age groups may enjoy organized programs and activities, both indoors and outside,” Keeney said.

Highlights of the center include two large gymnasiums with electric basketball scoreboards and multiply basketball goals.

Keeney said the building also features a mezzanine walking and running track, a state-of-the-art fitness center, aerobics room, dance studio and computer lab.

“Some of the other highlights of the center include a large multi-purpose room, locker rooms, meeting rooms and a catering kitchen plus an outdoor swimming pool and splash pad,” she said.

As an added safety feature, the site also will feature the south precinct headquarters of the Clayton County Police Department, which will be fully staffed, Keeney said.

The ribbon-cutting includesanother first for such an event, a children’s Easter egg hunt, which will begin at 1:45 p.m., immediately following the ceremony and guided tours of the facility.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will include food, music and games.

Keeney said the new center is another example of the Clayton recreation department’s efforts to meet the recreation needs of all residents, regardless of where they live.

“This facility offers phenomenal recreation activities for all individuals and families who use it,” Keeney said.
