(UPDATED AT 4 P.M. WEDNESDAY WITH INFO ON WHICH PARKS WILL KEEP TRASH SERVICE, INCLUDING THOSE IN SANDY SPRINGS AND VININGS)

In a news release Wednesday, the National Park Service announced it will be implementing a “pack out all trash” policy for visitors to the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area’s parks beginning Monday.

The policy change was made due to sequestration, an across-the-board federal budget cut of $1.2 trillion in discretionary spending, which started taking effect March 1.

But the parks in Sandy Springs (Powers Island) and Vinings (Paces Mill) were among four of the 17 locations along the area's 48-mile stretch to keep their trash cans. The others are Abbotts Bridge in Johns Creek and Cochran Shoals in east Cobb. However, the park service stated visitors should still bring their own bags and plan to pack out their trash, regardless of which unit they are visiting.

“We will continue collecting trash at receptacles at our busiest locations,” said area Superintendent Patty Wissinger. “But there are a lot of trash cans in the park that are time-consuming to empty because they are far apart and not as frequently used. By eliminating these, we save significant labor costs.”

Beginning Monday, area maintenance staff members will start installing signs asking visitors to “Pack Out All Trash.” At the same time, they will also be removing trash cans from most park locations.
