Tiffany Prewitt, a playwright in her own right, knows a thing or two about Southern flair.

The Birmingham, Ala. native knew when seeing what was previously an abandoned warehouse — now her restaurant space — that it had promise.

She spent two years renovating it from the ground up, only opening the restaurant in December of last year.

Her business, named Three Southern Girls Tea Room, is a true testament to her love of tea and all things Southern.

“I love going to tea rooms,” she said. “[My restaurant] is a combination of what I find to be uniquely Southern and what other tea rooms have.”

Hot teas in the orange, cinnamon and peach variety, served from a dainty, glass teapot reminiscent of Cinderella’s glass slipper, are poured into the floral teacups that adorn each table, covered with black tablecloths and leopard print runners.

More iced tea flavors are served in the eatery, such as blackberry, lemon berry, mango, peach, pineapple and raspberry.

But the food, according to Prewitt, is what completes her vision of tea time among Southern women, done just right.

“A lot of people think tea is about tea,” she said. “But to go have tea actually means to eat. We have a lot of Southern food and Southern ambiance.”

Popular items at the restaurant are the shrimp and grits, a bowl of steaming hot, creamy grits, cradled with sundried tomatoes, onions, cheese and bacon and topped with crispy, plump shrimp and the grilled pimento cheese sandwich, toasted with bacon and tomato.

Three Southern Girls has Sunday brunch every first and fifth Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will host its first Easter brunch Sunday, complete with an omelet station and fresh waffles.

The restaurant, at 1606 W. Cleveland Ave in East Point, is open Wednesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
